FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have a dental exam and cleaning?

+

In the absence of periodontal disease, you should have your teeth checked and cleaned at least twice a year. If you have a history of periodontal disease, you should go for a cleaning three times a year in an attempt to arrest the progression of periodontitis.

How can cosmetic dentistry help improve the appearance of my smile?

+

With beautiful and natural looking teeth, your smile will appear more youthful and healthy. Central Park Dental Aesthetics does not emphasize extremely white teeth; rather we strive to customize your smile to best suit you and to look healthy. When we maximize the optimum health and function of your teeth as a whole, the beauty of your smile will be achieved naturally.

What can I do about stained or discolored teeth?

+

In most cases, professional cleaning and good home oral hygiene can minimize staining. However, any dark colored drinks and food, such as red wine, soda and coffee, can stain teeth. Either in-office or home bleaching can remove stains, as guided by dental health care professionals. Some patients have stains within the tooth structure that cannot be removed through professional bleaching. In these cases, porcelain veneers are recommended to lighten the shade of the teeth.

What are porcelain veneers and how can they improve my smile?

+

Porcelain veneers are a type of dental restoration that is cemented on the outer surface of your teeth. They can improve your smile by: 1) correcting malformed and severely discolored teeth; 2) realigning teeth with minor misalignment; and, 3) restoring worn down teeth. The procedure often requires a miniscule amount of tooth structure to build up porcelain veneers. Each porcelain veneer is custom made by a lab technician to cater to your smile.

What should I do if I have bad breath?

+

You should let Dr. Chen or a member of the Central Park Dental Aesthetics staff know about bad breath during your routine exam. Most often, halitosis (bad breath) is caused by untreated periodontal disease or dental infection due to a cavity. Once the existing periodontitis or infection has been treated, bad breath can be prevented by good oral hygiene. However, other systemic medical conditions can contribute to bad breath and should also be discussed with the doctor.

How often should I brush and floss?

+

You should brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day. Preferably, brushing should be done after meals (i.e., after breakfast and before bed).

How can I tell if I have gingivitis or periodontitis (gum disease)?

+

As mentioned previously, halitosis (bad breath) is one of the signs. If you have bleeding upon flossing or brushing, it is most often a sign of gum disease. You must see the doctor to be evaluated for gum disease if your gums continuously bleed during brushing and flossing. You don't necessarily feel pain in your gums even if you notice bleeding. If you neglect the existing signs of gum disease, the diseased teeth can become mobile due to bone and attachment loss. In severe cases, the diseased teeth may fall out spontaneously.

Why is it important to use dental floss?

+

The plaque in between teeth cannot be removed by brushing alone. If all teeth are intact, brushing alone will leave about one third of the total surface area of your dentition with existing plaque. Using floss can clean those areas.

Is dental implant surgery covered by insurance?

+

Coverage is determined by your insurance plan. Please call Central Park Dental Aesthetics at (212) 601-2666 to discuss your options with our staff.

How long does a dental implant last?

+

Depending on the implant and how it is cared for, it may last a lifetime, but in some circumstances implants have to be re-examined and replaced.

How do I care for dental implant crowns?

+

Brush and floss them like natural teeth and schedule regular check ups with Dr. Chen.

If the implant fails after placement, what happens?

+

The implant is removed and a new implant is placed.

How long is the healing process after surgery?

+

Anywhere from 3-9 months. The average is 6 months.

Is dental implant placement surgery painful?

+

No. Local anesthetic is given during the surgery and, most often, it is done in the comfort of our office.

Will it be painful after the surgery?

+

We perform implant surgery in a precise and controlled manner. After surgery, the pain is usually less than for a typical tooth extraction.

How long is dental implant surgery?

+

Usually 30-60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

What can I eat after surgery?

+

You should be back to your normal diet within a few days. For the first few days, Dr. Chen recommends avoiding hot, spicy and rough foods. During that time, cool and soft foods are recommended.
